Work Experience

I've been a full-time member of academic staff since 1993, firstly in the Department of Media Arts and now in the School of Media, Art and Design. I was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Multimedia but I am now Principal Teaching Fellow. I was Acting Head of School during 2005. I was the Field Manager for Media Production for six years. Prior to joining the academic staff I did a lot of work in technical training including participation in projects funded by the British Council and others in Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and Bangladesh. I worked as a lab technician whilst studying for my degree and I worked as a programmer and system manager in Computer Services whilst doing my MSc.

Family/Hobbies/Interests

Outside work I concentrate on family things. Juliette and I got married in 1979(!) and have two children - Alex and Nick. I do a lot of the maintenance around our property - fencing, gardening etc. If there's time then I enjoy photography, reading 19th/20th century British history, music, watching cricket, walking and cycling around Dunsmore and, of course, a decent bottle of red. I take a keen interest in politics and current affairs and am addicted to BBC Radio Four. We've just built a log cabin in the garden and that provides us with both extra work and a quiet place to go and relax!

We keep horses, sheep, chickens and cats. We have around eight acres of garden/paddocks/woodland in Dunsmore, Bucks - a tiny village close to the highest point of the Chilterns. If you want some very fresh, free range eggs then just let me know!

Juliette does a lot of horse riding. She is a very good endurance rider and got a Bronze medal at the Golden Horseshoe ride over Exmoor (100 miles over two days) on her Arab mare Gwyn.

Our boys are very active:

Alex (12) is a figure skater at Silverblades Rink in Hemel Hempstead. He's a member of the Hemel Hempstead figure skating team and is working on his steps, jumps and spins with his coach Amy Rainbird. He is landing jumps up to a lutz and is working on his axel and sit & parallel spins. He's looking forward to starting pairs and artistic routines. He has recently started competing and his results so far are:

Competition Date Class Marks Result
Alexandra Palace Open 10 October 2006 1C Beginner Boys 2.2 2.3 2.1 2nd
2.4 2.3 2.1
Gillingham Open 6 November 2006 Kent Invicta Cup for Boys 2.3 2.2 2.2 3rd
2.4 2.2 2.3
Romford Open 5 March 2007 Hobby Shop Cup 2.0 2.0 2.0 1st
2.0 1.9 2.1

Alex is also taking part in the Christmas Ice Show at Silverblades this year. He practices 3-4 times a week for a total of about 10 hours. When he's not skating he builds bike jumps and trails in the woods and rides them. He's saving for a new decent mountain bike having now wrecked two cheap ones!

Nick (10) runs for his school in long-distance cross-country events. He's now training with Vale of Aylesbury Athletics Club and has started running for them in the Chiltern Cross Country League under 11s. He's also a cub (1st Wendover) and is learning to ride on his Caspian pony Simba. He rides out with Juliette two or three times a week and enjoys jumping and cantering as fast as possible! Nick is learning the acoustic and electric guitar and is getting pretty good - Smoke on the Water, Layla, Sweet Child of Mine etc.
